Aaron Rai Clinches the Abu Dhabi Title in Dramatic Playoff Showdown Versus Fellow Englishman Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated exceptional nerve to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, defeating his compatriot in a tense playoff following a topsy-turvy last day of play.
Rai sank a decisive birdie from around eight foot to clinch the victory, repeating his only previous Rolex Series triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a playoff win over Fleetwood.
Sunday's Play Drama
The champion started the last day with a one-shot advantage over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of 263 after a up-and-down, 67 closing round that included seven birdie putts and two bogeys.
Fleetwood edged one shot ahead with two holes remaining after a birdie on the sixteenth, but his rival tied it up again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie putt to win outright on the last green.
Play-Off Decider
This set up a playoff at Yas Links where Rai prevailed to claim the title and $1.5m (£1.13m) in prize money.

The Danish golfer fired six birdies of his as well, but his hopes of topping the leaderboard were dented by a dropped shot on the twelfth. English golfer Richard Mansell produced an excellent final-round 63 to finish tied for fifth with Australian Daniel Hillier.
