Ceramic Gift, Anyone? Meloni to Auction Off International Gifts for Charity

Passing on undesired presents might be seen as a little discourteous – unless it's done the right way.

A Philanthropic Sale

The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell an estimated 270 items bestowed upon her by foreign dignitaries while abroad. The eclectic collection reportedly features objects like a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gilded heels.

The collection, combined, have an approximate value of €800,000. They will be auctioned off to the highest bidder by a Rome-based fine art auction house. The specific date is yet to be set, although the aim is to hold the auction during the holiday season, with the proceeds benefiting various charities.

Palazzo Chigi Collection

These gifts reportedly locked away in a secure area on the upper level of Palazzo Chigi. Sources state that Meloni furthermore considering auction off gifts given to her preceding prime ministers that have been sitting unused over a long period.

A complete inventory is yet to be officially released, but partial details emerged earlier this year when an 11-page list of official presents was presented in parliament. The question focused on whether a rule restricting expensive presents was being respected. Legally, a prime minister must declare presents exceeding €300.

An International Assortment of Gifts

The collection includes:

  • A woven wrap from the leader of Albania, allegedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A customary Indian garment from India's prime minister.
  • A set of adornments from the president of Slovakia.
  • A porcelain tea set and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
  • A ceramic bowl from the ex-American leader.
  • A digital device from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Paintings from Moldova.
  • An assortment including cosmetics, a board, and numerous carpets from trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Possibly the most unusual gifts were the Milei figurine and the exotic footwear," reports suggest.

Diplomatic Backdrop

Meloni has been credited, particularly from within her party, with building relationships with global statesmen and positioning Italy as a prominent force on the international platform once again.

The forthcoming sale represents a unconventional way to deal with the state presents that build up during a time in office.
