Shadow justice secretary the shadow minister has labeled the circumstances as a "complete and utter mess," commenting earlier today.
Appearing on a broadcast interview, he referenced remarks made by David Lammy following a recent inmate discharge, saying that the minister would implement stricter checks.
"It took almost a week for the prison service supposedly to even become aware this has happened" and notify the authorities, the shadow official explains, "leaving them a week late in the manhunt to locate him."
The shadow minister condemns Lammy's performance during yesterday's PMQs and alleges him of a "complete failure in responsibility."
Addressing mistaken inmate discharges more generally, the spokesperson emphasizes that "every single accidental release [...] is unacceptable."
He admits there were such releases under the previous Conservative government, but says the number "has risen significantly" under Labour.
Calling for additional correctional facilities to be built, he adds: "What the British people expect now are proper safeguards implemented."
"That is a specific bureaucratic error by the Ministry of Justice supervised by David Lammy," the opposition member says.
