Educator Slain and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Firefight at Nigerian School

Armed conflict at school
Schools in northern Nigeria have repeatedly come under attack for militant organizations

Gun-wielding individuals have killed a teacher and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an attack on a girls' secondary school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, police reports indicate.

The armed faction invaded the comprehensive secondary school for girls in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on the start of the week, officials stated.

The attackers "confronted officers on duty in a firefight" before scaling the perimeter fence and abducting the learners from their hostel, authorities disclosed.

An educational worker was lost their life while safeguarding the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now receiving treatment.

Witnesses reported a considerable contingent of armed individuals, referred to locally as criminal elements, who arrived firing sporadically to generate terror.

Local residents disclosed to media that the attackers afterwards forced a group of female students into surrounding rural areas.

The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "additional police tactical units, alongside military personnel and vigilante groups" to the area.

A coordinated search and rescue operation is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and believed flight corridors.

In recent years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have become frequent targets for weapon-carrying factions, who often carry out abductions to demand financial compensation or leverage deals with the government.

The attack in Kebbi State highlights the persistent security crisis plaguing the region, causing relatives in Maga in a situation of anxious fatigue as they wait and hope for their children's secure homecoming.

Safety emergency in northern Nigeria has intensified significantly in the past few months, with educational institutions bearing the brunt of the conflict.
