Sir Humphrey Burton, a towering figure in arts broadcasting, has died at the age of 94.

He died peacefully at home, with his family present.

A Life Devoted to the Arts

Born in Trowbridge in 1931, he established himself as a cherished figure who demystified classical music for a vast audience.

In the mid-20th century, he was the BBC's head of music and arts and won accolades for seminal programmes like The Golden Ring.

He also launched the Young Musician of the Year competition in 1978, a platform that uncovered soloists such as violinist Nicola Benedetti.
