India's capital Awakens to Hazardous Pollution Following Diwali

As Tuesday dawned residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center found themselves exposed to extremely polluted air that fell into the "severe" level.

Alarming Air Quality Readings

Various sections of the capital showed an AQI above 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the healthy limit recommended by the global health authority.

Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 soared to of 1,800, amounting to 15 to 20 times higher than safe standards.

Pyrotechnics Prohibition and Recent Policy Shifts

For the past four years, the government had enforced a total prohibition on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during Diwali due to their major role to the dangerous smog that blankets the metropolis as winter approaches.

Yet recently, the recently formed local government appealed to the judicial authority to seek a modification of the prohibition.

The suggestion was allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – previously doubted by environmental experts as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a compromise between "tradition and public health".

Judicial Verdict and Enforcement

Much to the frustration of medical and ecological activists, the court agreed to the request, specifying that green firecrackers could be set off during specific hours throughout the festival.

Throughout the festival evening, there was extensive disregard of the regulated periods across the city, with minimal monitoring regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.

Many recording stations throughout the city recorded air quality peaking around late evening to the most severe levels seen during the festival in at least the past three years.

Cross-Border Consequences

Extensive ignition of firecrackers during the festival also sparked a blame game with neighbouring Pakistan, with officials in Pakistani Punjab province partly blaming declining air quality in Lahore on pollutants originating in across the border following the celebrations.

Long-Standing Pollution Issue

Extremely elevated levels of atmospheric toxins in the capital have persisted as a significant problem for fifteen-plus years, with the problem gradually deteriorating.

During celebratory seasons, the levels of toxic airborne contaminants in the air has been found to increase dramatically to seventy percent above the most severe records ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was once regarded as the world's most polluted city.

Diverse Contamination Contributors

The situation in Delhi is resulting from a mix of different contributors including automobile exhaust, dust, construction activities, garbage fires and haze from crop residue ignition in adjacent regions of neighboring agricultural zones.

Throughout these areas, rural residents routinely set their fields on fire to clear them quickly, creating hazardous smog that then gets trapped over the metropolitan area as cooler air arrives.

Health and Financial Impact

The economic and health consequences on the roughly thirty-three million people living in the Delhi area is significant, according to multiple investigations.

This pollution results in increased incidence of neurological, heart and circulatory and lung diseases, and can result in oncological diseases.

Air quality crisis is calculated to be accounting for ten thousand early deaths annually in the city.
