The beloved police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its seventh installment, announced by the BBC.
An upcoming six-episode series written by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the production team.
The actress expressed excitement about the comeback, saying she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."
The last season wrapped up in recent years with a finale that attracted over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been widespread for some time, but confirmation only arrived recently.
Fresh Obstacles for The Team
The seventh season begins with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.
Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to tackle corruption within the police force.
The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, the trio will take on their "most sensitive case so far."
Fresh Face and Intricate Plot
An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, faces allegations of misusing his authority to act as a sexual predator.
However, this investigation might serve as a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, plot details suggested.
In a statement, the creator commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."
"It's an honor to have had so many fans track the ups and downs of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a seventh installment."
He added: "Misconduct in this country was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."
Actor Responses
Martin Compston described appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".
"Not only the program's popularity but the people I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."
"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he said.
The Nottingham-born actress stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy the show is returning! Can't wait to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. The city, we'll see you soon!"
The veteran actor noted: "While anticipating the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."
"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."
Show History
The drama launched in 2012 and became a highly successful television series of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Stephen Graham.
Broadcasters haven't revealed when the new season will hit screens.
The finale of season six brought the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no plans for further series.
Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a new season is now being produced.
