Micky van de Ven scored twice as Spurs extended their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and delivered Everton their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a handful of chances, while Vicario made a series of excellent saves to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, advising the match official to review the goal on the screen and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates the manager's side up to third in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and are six points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils role at both ends of pitch

Following a uninspiring midweek performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a mere attempts on target, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's absence - added his second in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defensive duties, combining well with his defensive colleague as the duo handled superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have faded slightly and supporters flocked to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation are.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' two established centre-forwards - had netted only a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, despite having space and time to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, too, was unable to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered dangerous balls into the Tottenham box.
