As he approaches his half-decade plus one year in charge, Mikel Arteta has admitted that his longevity in North London is directly connected to delivering trophies.

Reflecting on: The Arteta Era

Arteta assumed control on the 20th of December in 2019 and soon guided the team to an FA Cup victory within months. Yet, that first major trophy remains his lone top-tier trophy since succeeding Unai Emery.

“I can,” Arteta responded upon being asked about his future past 2027. “Yet it's about today. And numerous factors need to fall into place in the next few months as well to deserve that opportunity.”

This weekend sees the six-year milestone with a game facing Everton, the very same club Arsenal faced immediately following his appointment was announced.

The Current Landscape

Given that trailing Manchester City set to face West Ham earlier in the day, Arsenal risk losing first place in the Premier League prior to their fixture. This situation arises even with Arteta managing a squad that has suffered over 100 injuries since the start of last season.

The manager is under a contract with 18 months to run on the deal he signed in 2024, but is acutely aware that results must come in the immediate future.

The Manager's Mandate

The manager expanded, stressing the daily requirement to justify his role. “My belief is that a manager has to earn the right to be here tomorrow. And that depends on how you react, how you communicate, how you enter the dressing room, the signal you send.”

He stated further, commending the consistent faith from the board and owners, but pinpointing the team's buy-in as paramount. “In the final analysis, the critical component are those players... For six years, I’ve seen just players with a standard of focus, desire to learn and give the maximum to the team.”

The squad faces the weekend fixture dealing with an additional absence. Defender Ben White has been sidelined with a strain that is anticipated to keep him out for several weeks.

Evolved Priorities

Even with the injury crisis and the intense pressure, Arteta is confident the club's “priorities and messaging” are profoundly distinct from when he began his reign.

The manager referenced the squad's displays as a sign they are nearing their goal. “Examine the performances, all the historical marks we surpassed... We still have yet to do that [win trophies]. But that tells you the standard we operate at.”

Arteta concluded, “That is a level that the Premier League has never experienced in the past. And our ambition is to achieve greater objectives. And if we do that, I think we are on the proper course to winning.”
