When I enter the space, Lamine Camara grabs a soccer ball he clings to until after the conversation. This serves as a powerful visual metaphor for a ambition he has never let slip. “My sole focus was football; my mind was set on nothing else,” states the AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His resolve and raw talent won over teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the most difficult approval to secure didn't come from a sporting director or coach, it was from his dad. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.

Overcoming Initial Obstacles

Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to pursue his career in the sport. A further barrier was his small stature, which deterred local club Casa Sports from offering him a contract.

However, the famed academy – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After Camara was named the best player in a local competition, Génération Foot were “astonished” to learn he was without a contract. They moved fast. “They took me directly to the training centre. They prevented me from going back home,” he recalled.

An Unforgettable Season and Continental Breakthrough

That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his country to the title and being named player of the tournament.

A month later, he was unveiled as FC Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” states the youngster. He resides by himself in Europe, a situation his family support to maintain his concentration.

Influences and On-Field Identity

Off-field noise are not really a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and superb playing qualities. Additionally, he's a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and accuracy from dead-ball situations are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to temper his aggression, having been sent off at the start of his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he quips.

Monaco, Teammates and Future Goals

With his current club, he cherishes learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” Camara noted.

Right now, attention is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. If you beat England on their soil…,” he states, pointing to a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

Regarding a transfer to the English top flight, he is committed to Monaco at present. “I feel really comfortable here,” he affirms. He is frequently ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, but is serious about targeting the main top prize down the line.

“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England in their own country… it gives you confidence.”
