The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The former head of state was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he remained under home detention pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a precautionary step after recent developments emerged.

This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the custody, the judge said intelligence from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the surveillance device to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His child, his son Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a meeting of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your couch? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Bolsonaro was convicted of leading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the national vote to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plan which encompassed plans to kill Lula and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was stopped because it failed to get the support of the armed forces officials. The current president was inaugurated without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged public facilities in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The security forces took action and around 1,500 people were detained.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to step in, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The former president called the court case a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 presidential election.
