Our planet could be under strain, yet there is hope. A novel accolade originating at the science, music and arts festival Starmus will motivate the public to make a difference.

The Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal is to be awarded to pay tribute to the esteemed scientist and conservationist who passed away this year. It is designed to celebrate those who champion our planet's biodiversity.

The Medal's Framework

The first recipients are slated for announcement at the upcoming Starmus event in the Canary Islands, scheduled from October 17th to 22nd the coming year.

It was shared that Jane Goodall, a former Starmus advisory board member, had endorsed the medal's establishment. “The concept of having this medal, and Starmus being entrusted to oversee it, is Jane’s,” a statement said. “She said that she wanted this to happen. And I think because of the unique bond she shared with the festival.”

“This medal will recognize enduring projects carried out to make our world improved for people, animals and the environment and foster motivation for the continuation such efforts,” commented a relative.

Format and Inspiration

A co-founder of Starmus stated that the medal – unveiled at a prestigious venue – will likely have multiple categories.

“The intent is for it to be very much similar to the Stephen Hawking medal for science communication that we created exactly 10 years ago,” it was explained. Goodall was an honoree of that award.

Sharing thoughts on the outlook for Earth, a prominent voice said, “Frankly, it is difficult to maintain optimism. Present governance globally is conducting a war on science. This situation really cripples collective action.”

“Realistically, the situation appears very good so we have to commence thinking again, more deeply about the consequences of our actions. And that’s not only climate change, that’s the entire manner in which we interact with our environment.”

Following an Example

Therefore, it was noted this is an opportune moment to emulate her guiding principles. “It is believed that in bestowing the prize, the focus will be on this core philosophy of Jane’s – which made her foremost concern, to transform the way we treat the other animals around us.”

Another key issue currently is the proliferation of misinformation. The focus of the upcoming Starmus festival is set as “the search for truth”.

“There is a recognition that truth has become a subject of discussion where political interests is involved. And it’s a very dangerous thing,” it was said. “The climate science is a science; it is impossible to have any influence by political agendas in this field.”

Hope and Determination

The aspiration remains that this honor can motivate positive change. “It’s about inspiring individuals to engage and to care and to work toward these goals, truly. Whether or not we feel hopeful, we must focus on doing our utmost,” a statement concluded. “Be prepared for setbacks, yet we must continue striving towards succeeding.”

A descendant engaged in environmental protection expressed optimism that “given direction and when empowered, humanity can be responsible caretakers of Earth”, highlighting the initiatives of an institute that, among its other activities, empowers young people become engaged with their community, wildlife, and environment.

“As Jane Goodall often emphasized, the choices we make each day are significant and it is up to us the kind of difference we make,” it was stated. “There is still time and this medal will offer support and increase understanding regarding constructive efforts that are being undertaken.”
