During the bulk of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield find themselves trapped in a realm of memories built from the past of the villain Henry. Their mission for a way out in episode 6 forces them to relive a defining event from Henry's youth—an event that could contain the means to overcome him for good.

A Journey Into the Cavern

After locating Max in the psychic realm known as Camazotz, Holly discovers she is hiding out in a chamber that Henry strangely fears. An accidental discovery a telescope found in Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies beyond the cave. Matching her view to the cut-out, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.

There, they witness a young, eight-year-old Henry find an injured and paranoid man. Attempting assistance, the man reacts violently, striking Henry in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly questions through tears. It was a factor, but the trauma went deeper than a simple act of survival.

A Naval Mystery and Secret Science

*The First Shadow* opens with the legendary naval test, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a plane later called the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who returned in a unresponsive state with an entirely new blood.

This man's son, a young Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in the Nevada desert. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to sell to the Russian agents, who were desperate to launch their own interdimensional projects. The man in the tunnel was that very thief.

Unlocking the Mystery

Given what is revealed about his research, the case most likely held samples of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon contact with the blood, causing the development of his psychic abilities—traits he would inadvertently transfer to the test subjects under Brenner's care.

A second theory, the container could have held exotic matter that was destined to travel to the Hawkins lab, where it maintains the stability of the mirror dimension. The prequel shows that Henry was transported in the Abyss, reappearing 12 hours later fundamentally changed. From then on, he fights the influence of a malevolent force, much like how the character Will was influenced by the shadow monster in season 2.

Confronting Terror

His lasting fear of that cave highlights how deeply scarring the event was for him. Even as he controls the collective consciousness and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy still exists. Fear is his tool, and the show is setting up a showdown between him and Will, who has overcome his greatest terrors to become stronger.

This journey has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Crucially, Will now knows what his enemy truly fears, potentially giving him a decisive edge in the series finale to come.
