Thomas Tuchel Seeks Bellingham's Passion Provided The Three Lions' Star Leaves His Ego at the Door.
A single omission did the trick. Another and it could have seemed spiteful from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is extremely shrewd not to understand that securing World Cup glory will likely need contributions by the talented midfielder, even if it is equally on the midfielder to blend into the game plans and team pecking order required with England now that he is back in Tuchel's warm embrace.
The manager seeks Bellingham's edge, his intensity, but it is a matter of using it in the right way. Personal talent counts but England understand from past setbacks that there is a price to pay when stardom prevails. Still, a point has been made.
Bellingham had much to ponder after not being selected of the recent team selection. He watched the national side secure their spot at next summer’s World Cup without him. He saw Morgan Rogers perform brilliantly as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He listened as the coach discuss loving the squad's spirit and values. Inevitably, he has responded in top form, netting important strikes for Real Madrid versus their rivals and the Italian side. Inclusion was a must; a second snub would have made his squad place in serious doubt.
The hope is that the manager will have a Bellingham directed towards intimidating opponents rather than his own colleagues. Ultimately, on a pure footballing level, there is no advantage to starting a conflict with a top talent in the world. The ideal scenario is that his period out of the team has made him realize that representing the national team is a precious, precarious thing. The coach, on his side, can now provide cover for the youngster after proving that he is willing to drop big names.
“No issue exists regarding him, there is no problem with the character,” Tuchel said. “Jude displays a competitive streak. It takes a certain edge to reach the heights that he reached. We all must support him and establish a setting which he can channel that intensity against rivals and towards the goals we are striving for as a team.”
Bellingham took up the spotlight at Tuchel’s squad announcement for this month’s dead-rubber qualifiers versus one opponent and the other. Any other news? Indeed, what about Phil Foden? This is a further gifted playmaker who needs love and guidance. He has not played for England since spring and has struggled to reach his best this year but Tuchel had to consider the 25-year-old after how he played in Manchester City’s win versus the German side recently.
The question, however, is how to use the attacking talents at England’s disposal. Morgan Rogers and Eze have earned their places and there will be a strong case to select Cole Palmer once he overcomes a ongoing injury. Would taking several attacking midfielders to the tournament be an overkill? The previous manager never found the right blend at Euro 2024. He compromised by forcing Foden and Bellingham into the starting lineup, restricting the captain's influence as a result.
It seems unlikely the current manager doing similar if it hurts the offensive structure. There is room for one No 10, with fast wide players on the wings. Clarity is beneficial. He is selected as a central attacker. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, called up for the first time, is a central midfielder and the recalled Adam Wharton will battle Elliot Anderson as a No 6. There will also be no position on the wing for Foden, who must play through the middle. Tuchel wants him near Kane. “It does not make sense to tell Foden: ‘You are needed on the pitch but there’s no space in your preferred role, can you play the left side? Or the other flank?’” he stated. “Phil is to feature in the central attacking zone, in the middle of the pitch. I've long had this vision about him for a long time. I think it fits his style the most.”
He agreed there are times when Foden has seemed out of sorts in an England shirt. “One senses as if, ‘Does he really enjoy it? And someone of his caliber who has such natural delight for the game, then clearly something is not right, be it his role, the environment, it's unclear.
“I think he is also accustomed to playing for Man City in a specific system, to have a defined role. I think he benefits greatly from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly should I turn? Where am I supposed to accelerate the match? Where do I have to defend?
The manager mentioned one star bursting through for easy finishes and Foden netting goals from outside the box. He added he has a longlist of 60 players. Several players, others, the goalkeeper and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have dropped out. A new face is rewarded for his excellent performances for Manchester City at defense. Intrigue abounds.
Leaving out of the striker means there is no direct replacement for Kane in the selection. Fascinatingly, he hinted at deploying Foden as a false 9 against one opponent or the other. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, Bellingham and Jarrod Bowen are alternatives should he be absent. Since the place is booked, this is an opportunity for testing tactics.
Meanwhile, it is additionally a moment to foster Kane’s relationship with Bellingham going. It is remarkable that you have to go back to Bellingham assisting the captain to net in an international match versus the Scots in over a year ago to find the sole instance in 35 games for England when the pair combined for a score. Tuchel will know that the two stars only exchanged the ball once during England’s draws with Denmark and Slovenia at the Euros. Their partnership is lacking.
“At this point eventually it falls to the duty of the players,” he said. He is not afraid to speak frankly. There is still a sense of the player being on trial. He cannot even be assured to begin versus Serbia and Albania. Tuchel desires him committed but he will be observing him carefully. Leave the ego outside. It will make a very strong squad into an superior one.
