'Trapped in a Dreadful Dream': Families of Unaccounted For Young People Await Information After Alpine Fire
The relatives of young people lost after a tragic inferno at a venue in a Swiss winter destination are enduring an agonising wait for answers and requesting information about their loved ones publicly.
The fire devastated the a popular bar in the alpine resort, located in the mountains of the Valais region, in the middle of the night of January 1st. Verified video reveal the roof structure being engulfed in flames as beverages with fireworks are held aloft.
Authorities have stated that it could take considerable time to identify the victims of the tragedy, which killed four dozen individuals and wounded another over a hundred. A spokesperson said on Friday that 113 of the injured have been identified, with work ongoing to identify the final individuals.
In the interim, families and friends have been using social media to request information about their missing relatives who were at the bar that night.
Desperate Searches for the Missing
The fate of Swiss national Arthur Brodard, a teenager, are still unconfirmed, according to an public plea from his mother.
The resident of Lutry near the city, explained to a publication that she had gone back to the city to check whether he was in the medical facility, while his father did the same in the capital, but could not find him.
"It feels like a terrible dream, an ordeal. Either I find my son in the morgue, or I find him in critical condition. Words cannot describe it," she said.
She explained that some of his companions had been located with burns covering a significant portion of their bodies. "It's indescribable; they went through a terrifying ordeal."
The Italy's foreign ministry has indicated that a number of of its citizens have not been located.
Among them is Emanuele Galeppini, a 16-year-old promising athlete, who hailed from Italy but now living in the UAE.
The national sporting body has stated that he is deceased, without mentioning the fire, paying tribute to a "young athlete who carried with him passion and authentic values."
His father, is quoted as saying that his son was at the bar and was last heard from around the new year. An official spokesperson has stated that a formal confirmation of his death is awaited.
Additional Missing Individuals
Giovanni Tamburi, sixteen, is likewise among the missing. His mother said that he had been on holiday but had gone out with a group and found himself at the venue.
"A close friend informed me they fled after the fire started and that he had his mobile with him, but then at a certain point he lost sight of him," she recounted, adding he had been wearing a distinctive piece of jewelry.
One of his educators said, "I remember his good nature and smile, coupled with great maturity. Often offer to get me a coffee."
Alice Kallergis, who holds dual Greek and Swiss nationality but lives full-time in Switzerland, was also at the bar on New Year's Eve, according to reports.
Her brother has published an urgent request on social media, saying the family has had "no updates" regarding the teenager or the three friends she was with, who are also unaccounted for.
Officials from her country of origin say they are actively engaged with the situation.
