UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller That Blends Survival Horror and Among Us Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has seized attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a unique game where a girl containing several human souls inside her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of high school age. Within her exist four separate souls, each with their own anxieties and motivations. These souls can take over at will, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.
Judging by revealed footage, much of the action unfolds within a eerie hospital, though additional clips depict the protagonist exploring a desolate church.
A World of Personal Dread
"What are you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Elements that appear minor to others can trigger something primal within us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are specific to each person."
The core gameplay loop involves controlling whichever soul emerges at any given time. However, these souls will change against your will during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's fears become exaggerated and attack the girl in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Choice
At first glance, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with orderlies all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the waiting room have large flowers growing from their necks are. Flowers are a recurring theme, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the souls claims that the physical form belongs to them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."
After a player believes a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, because every entity can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The last one remaining might be a fake. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
