Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is engaged in advanced talks to sell a portion of his shareholding in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

This transaction estimates Mercedes at £4.6 billion – an unprecedented figure for an F1 team – following the McLaren team were valued at £3.5bn in an adjustment to ownership structure in September.

The Austrian executive, who holds one-third of Mercedes F1, would sell a shareholding in the region of 5%.

The 53-year-old will remain as team boss and CEO should the deal proceed.

Ownership Structure

Remaining partners in Mercedes F1 are Mercedes and industrial group Ineos Group, who each also own a third of the company.

A Mercedes spokesperson said: "We are providing no comment on this. The management structure of Mercedes F1 will remain unaltered, and each shareholder are fully committed to the ongoing success of the brand in Formula One."

Valuation Growth

This arrangement would represent a significant increase in worth of the Mercedes team after Ineos acquired its stake for £208m in 2022.

The rise reflects the expansion in market values of F1 teams recently due to the growing popularity of the sport globally.

This was also seen in the box-office performance of the F1 movie starring Brad Pitt, which was released in summer 2023 and has grossed over $630m (£458 million) at cinemas worldwide.

It is the actor's top-grossing movie and the most successful sports movie to date.

Present Performance

Mercedes are second in the constructors' championship, trailing McLaren Racing, with three Grands Prix left in the current championship.

Mercedes' primary racer British driver George Russell has secured victory in 2 of the 21 grands prix this year and is in fourth place in the individual standings after McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes secured a record eight consecutive constructors' championships and seven drivers' titles, six for Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, from 2014 to 2021.
